hard fast rule of thumb: Unless a carefully worded contract is signed, rights to a piece of work usually* default to the content creator, not the buyer.
This includes illustrations, logo designs, character designs (as they are depicted in the sold work).
When you buy a piece of art, you're not automatically buying the copyright. Please be mindful of this, it is actually very important.
